This is a common feeling in career-oriented individuals. You step into a role with the intention of making a difference. But along the line, your role description fades, and you end up doing tasks that you did not sign up for. You find yourself either confused about your career trajectory or slowly falling out of love with your career choice. Instead of feeling stuck, use this as an opportunity to understand yourself more and to become better as a person.

When Work Stops Feeling Right

To gain clarity, there are a few things to consider if you are feeling stuck in your place of work.

Remember Why You Started

You need to ask how you found yourself in your line of work or workplace.

Ask yourself:

  • What attracted me to this job or career?
  • What was my original motivation?
  • Was I driven by money, influence, growth, passion, security, or survival?
  • Am I still motivated by the same things today?

None of these are wrong reasons to be working. But you might need to reflect if you still harbor the same motivation. For instance, you might have been motivated by money, and now that you have enough to be comfortable, you need something more purpose-aligned.

You may have entered a field because of prestige or family expectations, only to discover that it does not align with who you truly are.

Or you are just interested in a different line of work.

Ask these questions and give yourself enough time to answer them. You might not be stuck in the true sense of the word but just in a place that no longer aligns with your purpose.

Allow Yourself To Become A New Person

After you have answered the questions above and gotten clear about why you started, reinvent yourself. You felt stuck because you were ignoring something within you; now that you know what that is, let go of the part of you that is attached to your old identity. Allow yourself to become a new person. Because, like Heraclitus said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”

For you to act on the newly found information from your honest reflection, you need to become someone you have not yet known. Allow yourself to be that. Do not hold on to your past identity. If that was helpful, you would not have felt stuck.

Talk To Someone

Sometimes, the answers you need cannot come from you. You need to have someone you trust enough to listen to. It could be a mentor, a parent, a friend, or a counselor. But they should be people you listen to because of their achievements, and more importantly, because you know they have the best intentions for you.

Be honest about your recent activities and how you have recently been feeling stuck. Sometimes, the patterns and wisdom eluding you might be seen by others in simple conversations.

Do not always keep issues too close to your heart. Talk to someone.

Avoid Comparisons

The reason a lot of people feel stuck is that they measure their lives according to other people's successes. They only measure up to external yardsticks. But the world will always give you reasons to feel like you are not doing enough. It will always make you feel inadequate if you let it.

It is easy to feel left behind when someone in your workplace gets promoted before you, when a colleague appears more successful, or when people online constantly announce achievements. But you do not know the sacrifices they had to make or the opportunities they had. You are ignorant of their own personal struggles.

Comparison is just wanting other people's results without their problems.

Comparing yourself to others blinds you to your true progress. Because growth does not always look like promotions or flashy posts online.

Sometimes, you are building discipline, resilience, and patience. These are more important than social media hype and will someday be converted into tangible results. But only if you stay focused on what you are doing.

Make A Decision

It is useless to do all of these without making a decision. The lack of a decision is a decision itself.

You might not always have a clear line of action or even love what the solution points to, but do not wait too long to decide. If not, you might be conditioning yourself to get used to what your gut is fighting. It is wise to remember that you cannot always have a great plan right out of the gate.

Most great plans are a modification of average ones. So take a step and believe in your ability to always course-correct when the need arises.

However, feeling stuck and feeling overwhelmed are not always the same thing. Sometimes you are not confused about your direction; you are simply mentally and emotionally exhausted. In moments like this, the solution may not be a major life decision but learning how to slow down, recover, and understand why.

What To Do When You Are Feeling Overwhelmed

Find Out Why

Do not ignore your emotions. It is a mistake to label everything as “stress.” Take time to ask yourself:

  • What exactly is overwhelming me?
  • Is it the workload?
  • Is it fear about the future?
  • Exhaustion?
  • Financial pressure or lack of purpose?
You need to be aware of what is wrong with you so you can tackle it properly.

Prioritize One Thing at a Time

One of the easiest ways to become overwhelmed is to be in a constant state of action. When you do everything just because you can.

You cannot do everything all at once. That is why you should keep a to-do list, organize your tasks, and focus on completing one important thing before moving to the next.

When your mind becomes clearer, it is easier to move through your daily tasks with the right attitude.

Take Regular Rest

You cannot attain clarity by doing more. Burnout is not solved by pushing more.

Prioritize sleeping properly, eating well, and taking breaks. Your body and mind need recovery to function effectively.

It is impossible to think clearly when you are always tired.

Ask for Help When Necessary

No great deed was ever the product of just one hand or one mind. We all need others to help us in one way or another, as we journey through life.

You do not have to carry everything alone. It is strong to be self-sufficient, but it is stronger to know when to ask for help. To seek guidance or assistance.

Sometimes the fastest way forward is by allowing others to help you stand.

Remember That This Too Will Pass

In the words of Robert Schuller, “Tough times don't last, but tough people do.”

Hard seasons often feel like the end of the world while you are in them. But remember that nothing lasts forever. No matter how overwhelmed you feel, always keep your face to the sun. Avoid making permanent decisions because you feel exhausted. Remind yourself that though pain is temporary, regret can be permanent.

Give yourself time to pause, to reflect, to connect back to your core, or to explore new paths or to start all over again, if need be.
