You can now download your official NIN slip free on your phone, without visiting a NIMC office or paying a cyber café. The National Identity Management Commission's NINAuth app lets any Nigerian with a NIN download the slip in a few taps: open the app, tap Do More with NINAuth, select NIN Slip, then download and save it. NIMC says it is the same slip it issues at its centres, valid at banks, government offices and anywhere else it is required.

"NINAuth users can now download their official NIN slip directly from the app, free of charge," NIMC says.

Who this guide is for

Anyone who already has a National Identification Number and needs a copy of their slip, for a bank account, school admission, NYSC registration, a passport application or a job. If you do not have a NIN yet, you must first enrol at a NIMC centre or an accredited partner; the app cannot create a NIN for you.

What you need

You needWhy
Your 11-digit NINTo sign in and find your record
A smartphoneNINAuth runs on Android and iPhone
Mobile data or Wi-FiThe app does not work offline
Good light and a clear view of your faceSetup includes a face check against your NIMC record
The latest version of NINAuthThe slip feature only appears in recent versions

Step 1: Install the official app

Download NINAuth from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or follow the download link on NIMC's official site, ninauth.nimc.gov.ng. Check the app is published for the National Identity Management Commission before installing. If you already have NINAuth, update it, because NIMC says the slip download needs the latest version.

Step 2: Set up your account

  1. Open NINAuth and enter your NIN.
  2. Create a six-digit PIN you will remember. You will use it to open the app.
  3. Complete the face verification. Hold the phone at eye level, in good light, with nothing covering your face.

Face checks can fail on the first try. If yours does, move to brighter light, remove glasses or a cap, hold the phone steady and try again.

Step 3: Download the slip

  1. On the home screen, tap Do More with NINAuth.
  2. Select NIN Slip.
  3. Tap download and save the file to your phone.

You can then print it at home, at a business centre, or send it to whoever asked for it. Keep a copy on your phone and in your email so you can find it again.

NIN slip, NIN card and NINAuth: which do you need?

DocumentWhat it isBest for
NIN slipA printable document showing your NIN detailsOffices that ask for a hard copy
Digital card on NINAuthA digital version of your identity in the appShowing ID on your phone, in person or online
NINAuth verificationSharing your NIN data with an organisation, with your consentBanks and services that verify you digitally

NIMC describes the app as your digital ID and the slip as the alternative for situations where a hard copy is requested. The digital card in NINAuth is not a replacement for your physical card or slip, according to NIMC, but it gives you a way to prove your identity from your phone.

Where you will need it

Your NIN is now the key to most official services in Nigeria. You will be asked for it, and often for a printed slip, when you:

  • open or upgrade a bank account, or update your BVN details;
  • register or replace a SIM card with any network;
  • register for JAMB's UTME, which requires a NIN;
  • apply for or renew an international passport;
  • register for NYSC or apply for many government jobs and programmes.

Downloading the slip once and keeping a saved copy means you never have to queue or pay an agent the next time an office asks for it.

Common problems and fixes

ProblemFix
"NIN Slip" option missingUpdate NINAuth to the latest version
Face verification keeps failingUse daylight or a bright room, face the camera directly, remove glasses and try again
App will not loadCheck your data or Wi-Fi; the app needs an internet connection
You forgot your NINCheck your old slip, card or bank records, or visit a NIMC enrolment centre with ID
Your details are wrongThe app shows your record as NIMC holds it. Corrections, such as a date of birth change, go through NIMC and carry a fee

Stay safe

Do not give your NIN, photo or PIN to websites or agents offering to "print your NIN slip" for a fee. Now that the official app does it free, there is no reason to hand your identity data to a third party. NINAuth lets you share your NIN data only with organisations you approve, which protects you from identity theft. If someone uses your NIN without permission, report it through NIMC's official channels.

What it costs

The slip download in NINAuth is free. Your only cost is data and any printing. Other NIMC services, such as modifying your record, are paid separately; check the current fees on NIMC's official channels before you pay anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is the NIN slip from NINAuth official?

Yes. NIMC says it is the same document it issues, valid at banks, government offices and anywhere else a NIN slip is required.

Do I need to visit a NIMC office?

No, as long as you already have a NIN. You only need an office to enrol for a new NIN or to correct your details.

Can I download a slip for someone else?

The app is set up with your own NIN and face check, so each person should download their own slip on their own NINAuth account.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. NINAuth is available on the Apple App Store as well as Google Play.

Install NINAuth, set it up with your NIN, PIN and a face check, then tap Do More with NINAuth and NIN Slip. It is free, official and takes a few minutes.
