You’ve got a new iPhone in your hand. Your years of WhatsApp chats, voice notes, and group media are sitting on your Android, and you have no idea if any of it will survive the switch. The good news: all of it can move safely. The bad news: the process has exactly two steps where most people fail, and no article warns you about them before you hit them.
This guide covers the only officially supported method to transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone. No sketchy third-party apps. No data breaches. Just the real process, with the failure points named before you start.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you touch a single setting, confirm you have everything on this list. Missing any one item can abort the transfer mid-process, requiring a restart from scratch.
Required:
- An Android device with WhatsApp installed and updated to the latest version.
- An iPhone that is either brand new or fully reset (more on why below)
- Both devices are charged to at least 80%; the transfer drains the battery faster than normal use.
- A stable WiFi connection, with both devices on the same network.

- On iPhone: stay physically nearby and tap the screen every few minutes during the transfer to prevent auto-lock. Apple does not offer a workaround during the setup process.
Failure Point 2: WiFi network switching
Android devices automatically switch to stronger nearby networks. If your Android jumps networks during the transfer, the connection breaks, and the process fails.

- On your Android, go to Settings → WiFi.
- For every saved network except the one you’re using, tap the network name and toggle off Auto-connect.

How to Transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone (Step-by-Step)
This is the complete process using Apple’s official Move to iOS method. Do not skip steps.
Step 1: Reset your iPhone
Move to iOS only works during the iPhone’s initial setup. If your iPhone is already set up and in use, erase it first.
Go to: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.
Back up your iPhone data to iCloud before erasing it if you’ve already been using it. Once erased, your iPhone will restart to the setup screen. That’s where you need it.
Step 2: Begin iPhone setup until you reach “Transfer Your Apps & Data.”
Work through the iPhone setup screens, language, region, WiFi, Face ID, and passcode until you reach the screen that says “Transfer Your Apps & Data.” Tap From Android. Your iPhone will display a 10-digit or 6-digit authentication code. Leave this screen open.
Step 3: Open Move to iOS on your Android
Open the Move to iOS app on your Android device. Tap Continue, read and accept the terms, then tap Next. The app will ask for the code shown on your iPhone. Enter it.
Your Android will prompt you to connect to a temporary WiFi network your iPhone has created. Tap Connect. This is a direct device-to-device network; it replaces your normal WiFi connection for the duration of the transfer.

Step 4: Select WhatsApp as the data to transfer
On the Transfer Data screen, toggle WhatsApp to include it. When you do, WhatsApp will open automatically on your Android to prepare the backup. Follow the on-screen prompts. WhatsApp will create a local backup of your chats, media, and voice notes formatted specifically for iOS transfer. Do not close WhatsApp during this step.
Once the backup is ready, you’ll return to the Move to iOS app. Tap Continue to begin the transfer.
Step 5: Keep both screens awake and wait
Transfer time depends on your data size. A few hundred megabytes takes around 10–20 minutes. Several gigabytes of media can take over an hour. Keep both screens awake throughout, tap your iPhone periodically, and do not use either device for other tasks.
When the transfer completes, your iPhone screen will show a completion message.
Step 6: Finish iPhone setup and activate WhatsApp
Complete the remaining iPhone setup steps. Then open WhatsApp on your iPhone. Verify your phone number. WhatsApp will restore your transferred chats and media.
Important: You can only transfer one WhatsApp account during this process. WhatsApp Business accounts are not supported by Move to iOS; only standard WhatsApp accounts. One-shot rule: If you skip the WhatsApp transfer during setup and complete the rest of your iPhone configuration, you cannot go back and transfer WhatsApp later without erasing your iPhone and starting over.

After the Transfer: What Happens to Your Old WhatsApp?
Your old Android WhatsApp stays intact. The transfer copies your data; it does not delete it from your Android. Once you activate WhatsApp on your iPhone with your phone number, your Android WhatsApp account logs out automatically.
If you log back into WhatsApp on your Android, your conversations will still be there from the local backup on the device. Your Google Drive backup also remains untouched. Neither is deleted by the migration.
