Full Program Details
AI courses are everywhere, but very few are built by a top engineering school with African problems in mind, and fewer still cost nothing. Carnegie Mellon University Africa, the Kigali campus of the US university, runs exactly that: a six-course online Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Africa. Applications for the next cohort opened on 15 October 2026 and close on 15 November 2026, with classes starting on 17 January 2027.
A free, six-course online AI program from Carnegie Mellon University Africa, from Python and the math behind machine learning to applied generative AI, with a verifiable certificate at the end.
Details at a glance:
- Provider: Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa)
- Format: online, six courses with hands-on exercises using industry tools
- Cost: free for qualified applicants
- Workload: at least 5 to 6 hours a week

What You Will Study
The program has two tracks.
Perspective and context:
- Artificial Intelligence: Past, Present and Future
- AI and Machine Learning in Africa
Technical:
- Python for AI
- Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning
- Machine Learning Essentials
- Applied Generative AI
CMU-Africa says the program is aimed at early-career learners looking for internships or entry-level roles, and at mid-career technical professionals who want to move into AI work such as machine learning applications, AI app development and AI product support.
Who Can Apply
- You have taken introductory courses in linear algebra and in probability and statistics.
- You have some computer programming experience.
- You have a laptop or desktop computer and reliable internet access.
- You can commit at least five hours a week.
The official pages do not set a nationality, age or degree requirement, though the program is designed around African contexts. Undergraduates and working professionals are both in the target group.

GizPulse Verdict
Who this is for: Computer science, engineering, math and statistics students, and working developers or analysts across Africa, who want a structured AI foundation with a respected university name on the certificate and no tuition bill.
Who should pause: Complete beginners with no coding or no linear algebra yet. Spend the next few weeks on free Python and math refreshers first, or wait for a later cohort. Anyone who cannot reliably find five or six hours a week should also hold off.
One tip to stand out: Your goals statement is the main thing that separates you from other applicants. Name a specific problem in your country or industry, such as crop disease detection or fraud in mobile money, and explain how the courses will help you work on it.
