MultiChoice Nigeria is replacing every DStv and GOtv package from 5 November. DStv's new line-up starts at ₦6,000 a month for Starter and tops out at ₦44,500 for Premium, and a new ₦21,000 Sports package carries every Premier League and Champions League match, Technext and BusinessDay reported from the company's media briefing on Tuesday.
It is the first major product change since France's Canal+ took control of MultiChoice, and it comes with another: the company says it is choosing a new streaming platform to replace Showmax.

"We think we have too many packs today," MultiChoice Nigeria chief executive Kemi Omotosho told reporters.
The new DStv packages and prices
| Package | Monthly price | What it is built around |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | ₦6,000 | Africa Magic+ and SuperSport KICKOFF, with a Premier League match of the week and selected Champions League games |
| Select | ₦11,000 | Movies, local and international series, the full kids' line-up and some sport |
| Sports | ₦21,000 | Every Premier League and Champions League match, Europa League, NBA, WWE and UFC, plus Select's entertainment channels |
| Premium | ₦44,500 | The widest mix, adding Formula 1, MotoGP, Grand Slam tennis and golf majors |
The biggest change for football fans is the Sports package. Watching every Champions League match used to mean paying for Compact Plus. Now it sits one tier above Select.
GOtv moves to four packages too: Easy, Starter, Select and Sports. MultiChoice did not give GOtv prices at the briefing, so check the GOtv app or website before your next renewal.
Which package should you pick?
Use what you actually watch, not the channel count:
- You watch mainly Nollywood and local shows. Starter at ₦6,000 carries Africa Magic+ and a weekly Premier League match. It is the cheapest way to keep DStv on.
- Your home watches films, series and kids' channels. Select at ₦11,000 adds movies, international series and the full kids' line-up.
- You never miss a Premier League or Champions League match. Sports at ₦21,000 is the package built for you, and it keeps Select's entertainment channels.
- You follow Formula 1, tennis or golf, or want everything. Premium at ₦44,500 is the only package with those.
If you mostly stream on your phone or smart TV and do not need a decoder, compare DStv Stream, which starts at ₦6,000, before buying hardware.
What happens to your current subscription
You do not need to do anything. Subscribers move automatically to the closest new package with no transition fee. According to Technext, Access subscribers move to Starter and Compact subscribers move to Sports. Prepaid customers keep the value they have already paid for.
"You will not get less than what you paid for," Omotosho said.
New customers get a ₦15,000 bundle with a DStv or GOtv decoder, a full installation kit and one month of an entry-level package. DStv Stream, which needs no decoder, starts at ₦6,000 a month.
A Showmax replacement is coming
MultiChoice closed Showmax on 30 April after Canal+ said its losses had become unsustainable. Some Showmax originals moved to DStv Stream, but subscribers have complained about missing episodes, and Omotosho admitted the move was not complete.
"We're doing now an audit of what is the best streaming platform to launch," she said. She gave no launch date. MultiChoice is also looking at sharing content libraries across Canal+ markets, including France and other African countries.

Will prices rise again?
Omotosho tied future prices to the economy: "As long as the economics are good, we will not pass price increase." That is a softer promise than a freeze. With Canal+ reporting falling like-for-like revenue at MultiChoice, cheaper entry packages look like a bid to win back viewers lost to streaming and to rivals such as MTN One TV.
For most homes, the choice now comes down to two questions: do you watch football every week, and how many channels do you really use?
