Full Program Details
Picture a PhD where you do not pick a department on day one. You rotate through different labs, talk to physicists over lunch and neuroscientists over coffee, and choose your thesis lab only once you know what excites you. That is the idea behind the graduate school at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in southern Japan.
OIST is now taking applications for its PhD program for 2027 entry. The deadline is 15 November 2026 at 23:59 Japan time, and the whole process, from the first form to the interviews, is in English.
OIST says its PhD students are fully funded with a Research Assistantship that covers full tuition and a comfortable living standard, and the university pays relocation, moving and travel costs to Okinawa.
Details at a glance:
- Level: five-year interdisciplinary PhD
- Funding: Research Assistantship covering full tuition and living costs (per OIST's admissions FAQ)
- Relocation: moving and travel expenses to Okinawa provided by OIST
- Language: English
- Who: Bachelor's or Master's graduates, or students finishing before enrolment; no nationality restriction stated
- Application fee: 5,000 JPY (no fee waivers)
- Deadline: 15 November 2026, 23:59 JST
- Start dates: 1 May 2027, 1 September 2027 or 1 January 2028
What It Covers
OIST's admissions FAQ states that students enrolled in the PhD program are fully funded with a Research Assistantship, and that the funding covers full tuition and ensures a comfortable living standard. It also says OIST provides financial support for relocation, including moving and travel expenses. OIST's public pages do not publish the exact assistantship amount, so ask the admissions team if you need the figure for your planning.
On campus there is a child development center with fees based on income, which matters for applicants with families.
How the PhD Works
The program lasts five years. Students start with coursework and laboratory rotations across fields, then choose a research unit and thesis supervisor. Years 3 to 5 are for thesis research and submitting a thesis for examination. OIST keeps a small student to faculty ratio.
Who Can Apply
- Holders of a Bachelor's or Master's degree, or students expecting to finish their degree before the enrolment date
- No nationality requirement is stated on the official page
- Documents must be in English. If your university did not teach in English, you must submit a TOEFL iBT or IELTS score from the last two years. OIST sets no minimum score.
- You must attend the online Admissions Workshop if shortlisted

GizPulse Verdict
Who this is for: strong science, mathematics and engineering graduates from anywhere, including Africa, who want a funded English-language PhD and like the idea of exploring several fields before choosing a lab.
Who should pause: anyone who cannot get 2 to 5 recommendation letters from professors in the next four weeks, or who wants a PhD in the humanities or business, which OIST does not offer.
One tip to stand out: name two or three OIST research units in your statement of purpose and explain what you would bring to each. It shows you understand the rotation system and have done your homework.
