Most people think of design as consumer apps and websites. At Canonical, design also means making the tools that build clouds and ship software feel clear to the engineers who use them every day. The company is now hiring a Senior Design Manager to lead that work, fully remote from anywhere in EMEA.
About Canonical
Canonical is the company behind Ubuntu, one of the most widely used open source operating systems for cloud, AI, IoT and developer machines. It has worked remotely since 2004 and employs more than 1,200 people across over 75 countries. The business is founder led and profitable, and its customers include the largest public cloud and chip companies.

Day to day, you will:
- Review your team's work and hold it to a high standard
- Support each designer's career growth through regular coaching
- Improve team workflows, including outsourced production and work with Web Engineering
- Agree clear, testable outcomes with engineering stakeholders
- Develop design systems and guidelines that keep quality consistent
- Work with the wider design leadership to grow Canonical's design practice
- Engage the open source community and share what your team learns
About You
- A portfolio that shows excellent UX work and real comfort with technology
- Strong education in design or a related behavioural science field
- Experience across the full product cycle, from user research to implementation guidance
- A track record managing a design team that works with technical stakeholders
- Ownership of deadlines and open, transparent delivery
- Familiarity with quantitative methods for improving designs
- Willing to travel up to four times a year for company events
What Canonical Offers
- Fully remote work, as the company has done since 2004
- A personal learning budget of USD 2,000 a year
- Annual compensation review and recognition rewards
- Annual holiday leave and parental leave
- An Employee Assistance Programme
- Travel to company sprints in new locations, with Priority Pass and long-haul upgrades
Canonical bases pay on location, experience and skills and does not list a salary for this role. Designers in Lagos, Nairobi or Cairo with experience leading teams on developer tools should take a look. Apply on the official Canonical careers page.
