Every second a browser wastes is felt by hundreds of millions of people at once. Mozilla's Firefox Performance team hunts down those wasted seconds across Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, and it wants a staff engineer who enjoys finding the needle in the haystack.

About Mozilla

Mozilla Corporation makes Firefox and other products used by more than 225 million people a month. It is wholly owned by the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, so it answers to its mission rather than to shareholders. Its teams work in the open alongside thousands of volunteer contributors.

About the Role

The Performance team is responsible for making every part of Firefox fast. You will profile and fix slow code, help other teams write fast code, and own the performance of a major area of the browser.

You will:

  • Write code and tests, build prototypes and analyze performance bottlenecks
  • Work across C++, JavaScript, Kotlin, Rust and Python, with an emphasis on C++ and JavaScript
  • Teach other engineers to write faster code through reviews, talks, tools and docs
  • Break big performance problems into clear steps and drive them to completion
  • Help set the direction of performance benchmarks and the team's technical roadmap

About You

  • A BS or MS in computer science or computer engineering, plus 5 or more years of relevant experience
  • Deep proficiency in C++ and working proficiency in JavaScript
  • Proven experience building performance-critical software
  • Skill with profiling tools such as VTune or Xperf
  • Experience with multithreading, disk I/O or GPU work
  • Strong written communication for a distributed team

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with web standards
  • Android or Windows application programming
  • A solid grasp of statistics
  • Prior work on a modern web browser

What Mozilla Offers

The posted US base pay ranges are $163,000 to $218,000 (Tier 1 locations), $150,000 to $200,000 (Tier 2) and $139,000 to $185,000 (Tier 3).

  • Performance-based bonus plans
  • Medical, dental and vision cover
  • Retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting
  • Quarterly company-wide wellness days and a day off for your birthday
  • Home office stipend, professional development budget and paid parental leave
