About Canonical
Every app, bank and AI model depends on storage that does not lose data. Canonical, the company that publishes Ubuntu, wants that storage to be open source and cheap to run on ordinary hardware. Its Ubuntu platform powers public cloud, AI, IoT and enterprise systems, and the company has more than 1,200 staff in over 75 countries. Nearly everyone works from home, with in-person team meetups two to four times a year. Canonical is founder-led and profitable.
About the Role
Canonical is hiring an engineering manager for its Ceph and Distributed Storage team. Ceph is the open source storage system used in large data centres and small edge sites alike, and Canonical's goal is to make it easy to install, manage and use at any size.

- Hiring and developing engineers through coaching, mentoring and feedback
- Setting realistic schedules from careful estimates and improving them over time
- Managing expectations with other engineering teams and outside stakeholders
- Owning sound architecture, testing, documentation and code quality
- Joining the wider leadership team and working with leaders across the company
- Travelling up to 20% of the time for internal and external events
About You
- A software engineering background, ideally with Python and C++
- Experience running scale-out storage clusters on Linux in production, ideally Ceph
- A track record of leading, coaching and mentoring developers who ship quality software on time
- Solid experience with agile development
- Real interest in building products that make infrastructure easier to operate
- A love of new technology and of helping people grow
What Canonical Offers
- A fully home-based role
- In-person team sprints in locations around the world
- Work on one of the most widely used open source storage systems
The role is open across EMEA, which includes Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt and South Africa. Storage engineers ready to lead a team should apply on the official Canonical careers page.
