AI companies read Wikipedia at enormous scale. The Wikimedia Foundation's answer is Wikimedia Enterprise, a paid service that gives big reusers reliable, commercial-grade access to Wikimedia content while helping fund the free encyclopedia everyone else uses. The Foundation now wants a seasoned communications lead to tell that story to the press, to tech buyers and on conference stages.

About the Wikimedia Foundation

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit that runs Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. It is funded mostly by donations from millions of people, with an average gift of about $15, and it works remotely with staff and contractors in more than 40 countries. Wikimedia Enterprise is its commercial product for large companies that reuse and distribute Wikimedia content.

About the Role

This is a full-time contract: 40 hours a week for an initial six months, with a possible extension. You will sit in the Media Relations team and report to the Communications Manager, with a dotted line to the President of Wikimedia Enterprise.

You will:

  • Build and own the external communications plan for Wikimedia Enterprise across media, trade press and speaking events
  • Build relationships with mainstream and B2B tech reporters and with conference organizers
  • Act as a main media contact for Enterprise, prepare spokespeople and lead fast responses on sensitive stories
  • Write and review press statements, blogs, pitch notes and briefing documents
  • Run the communications side of major launches with the Enterprise Growth team
  • Manage PR agencies when needed and set goals and KPIs to track results

About You

  • 8 or more years in communications, including senior or lead work in tech or B2B tech
  • Experience connecting communications with marketing or growth goals
  • A record of earned media and thought leadership campaigns
  • Strong writing and editing across formats, and sound judgment on reputational risk
  • Experience working remotely across time zones and in emerging markets
  • Comfort picking up a live workload quickly with little onboarding

Nice to Have

  • Experience at a nonprofit, open source or mission-driven organization
  • A real understanding of AI, data licensing and content provenance debates
  • Familiarity with Wikipedia and the free knowledge movement

What the Wikimedia Foundation Offers

For applicants based in the United States, the posted annual pay range is $118,361 to $182,658, depending on location and other factors. Pay outside the US is adjusted to the country of hire. Non-US contractors are hired through a local Employer of Record and must already have the right to work where they live.
